ISFAHAN Some 2.1 million tons of various kinds of steel were produced in Isfahan industrial complex in the past Iranian year, ended March 20. Managing Director of the Isfahan Steel Mill Mahmoud Islamian further said Sunday that of this amount, 120,000 tons were high-quality steel. "Production of this amount of high-quality steel has saved the country $34 million in hard currency," he said.
Domestic need of high-quality steel is 350,000 tons annually, he added. The managing director said that the mill's production of high-quality steel is to rise to 160,000 tons this year. Turning to expansion projects of the steel mill, he said construction of Khorassan Steel Complex with a production capacity of 550,000 tons of iron rods is one of the major projects of the complex.
He said that construction of Khorassan Steel Complex is estimated to cost $125 million as well as Rls.500 billion. Another project, Islamian said, is the Saba Steel Production Factory which is to be constructed at the Isfahan Steel Complex with an investment of $320 million plus Rls.800 billion. The project, slated to go on stream within about two years, has the capacity of annually producing 700,000 tons of steel sheets of various thickness, he said.
Islamian added that 65,000 tons of various kinds of steel were exported to Spain, Italy, Portugal, Germany, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) last year. Another report said that over 1.938 million tons of steel were produced in Isfahan's Mobarakeh Steel Complex in the last Iranian year (ended March, 20), said the managing director of the complex Ahmad Ali Harati-Nikrouz Sunday. He added that out of the figure, 1.466 million tons of steel were absorbed in the domestic market and the rest exported.
He also noted, "for the second consecutive year, the exported goods have fetched enough foreign exchange incomes for the complex to pay for all the raw material and spare parts it needs." Harati-Nikrouz added, "over Rls.13.9 billion plus $25 million have been saved in the consumption of energy, and procurement of raw material and spare parts." The managing director of Mobarakeh Steel Complex stated that the expansion phase, which aims to boost the production from the current 2.4 million tons annually to four million tons per year, is underway.
He said so far, 75 percent of the production phase as well as 50 percent of rolled-steel phase are completed. He also noted that production of sponge iron has increased from 600,000 tons to 710,000 tons annually, registering an increase of 18.4 percent. The official concluded by saying that the three years ago, the complex was granted the standards certificate of ISO 9001.
